Former U.S. President Bill Clinton met with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il Tuesday in Pyongyang, state-run media said, in an apparent attempt to secure the release of two U.S. journalists held there since March.
According to a report from South Korea's Yonhap news agency, North Korean radio stations late Tuesday reported that Mr. Kim hosted a dinner for Mr. Clinton. The White House said Mr. Clinton didn't carry a message from President Obama to Mr. Kim, contrary to North Korean state media reports. State media also showed images of the two meeting.
Mr. Clinton's surprise trip poses diplomatic and political risks for the Obama administration yet also holds the prospect of changing a long-fractious relationship that has become more antagonistic over the past year.
No agenda or details of the trip were announced by the U.S. and it was unknown how long Mr. Clinton would stay in North Korea.
